Whether you're transitioning from spreadsheets to more versatile databases or looking for a powerful database program even non-geeks will love, it's hard to beat FileMaker Pro 5.5. Designed with plenty of input from users, third-party developers, and OS mavens, it is one of the simplest, most flexible data management systems available.

Cross-platform interoperability extends from Mac OS X to Windows 2000, Red Hat Linux, handhelds, and beyond. With a broad range of ready-built business templates and strong import features (like drag and drop from Microsoft Excel), the typical user will be up and running on the first day, sharing data over intranets, LANs, or the Web. SQL queries are a snap, as are ODBC exchange and instant publishing--all new features that were built in after listening to input from FileMaker Pro users. The graphics are slick and easy to customize, and users won't have many surprises when they publish their work; in this case, what you see really is what you get.

Despite its relative simplicity and promises of ease of use, newcomers to FileMaker Pro should expect to spend more than a few hours exploring and familiarizing themselves with the features. Those with no database experience will have a tougher time, but persistence pays off and the rewards are well worth the effort (the online help and customer service support should make this process a little sweeter). Additional incentives include record-level security, added scripting steps, and easy send-mail options.

FileMaker Pro 5.5 Specifications

FileMaker Pro combines powerful information management and surprising ease of use. It handles all business data-management needs, including job tracking, asset management, inventory, customer information, and payroll, over the company intranet, local area networks (LANs), or even wired or wireless handhelds.

This version of FileMaker Pro has many enhancements based on input from users, IT management, and third-party developers. It can now query databases based on field, and features a new Execute SQL script step, as well as a revamping of the Instant Web Publishing that allows users to publish in the same format as their FileMaker Pro files, without writing any code.

The Web Companion translates a number of multistep scripts, providing a high degree of fidelity between PC-hosted FileMaker Pro databases and those published on the Web. You can also import specific-named ranges of Microsoft Excel data, a useful feature if there is more than one row of description or label data above the actual datasheet data to be imported. With a new multithreaded, built-in HTTP server, the processing capability of FileMaker Pro delivers faster response times for all requests including static data and image displays. Web Companion now supports buttons in headers and footers, sorting by clicking column headers and uniform row heights.

This version will enable data access control to individual records: users can specify comprehensive calculation formulae to restrict browsing, editing, or deleting records, based on the user's password. A new interface has been introduced so that FileMaker Server guests can now remain connected even if they have been idle. This prevents users from being disconnected from a file that is being hosted on the Internet by a client that is being used as a Web server.

CodeWarrior Learning Edition Overview

One thing to note immediately about CodeWarrior Learning Edition: it's designed to help you, the beginning or aspiring programmer, learn how to use CodeWarrior and its vast array of tools. In other words, CodeWarrior Learning Edition doesn't teach programming languages; rather, it provides the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) used to create software programs. The average IDE consists of an editor for typing and modifying code, a means for compiling and executing a program, and a debugger. You will find that this package does more for your programming knowledge in terms of giving you an introduction to the software development cycle, from the initial creation to compiling, debugging, and release. The Learning Edition serves largely to encourage beginning programmers not only to sharpen their knowledge but to become comfortable with (and loyal to) Metrowerks' programming packages and online community--including their free classes.

The content appears in a graphical book with tabs, selected glossary phrases, and video clips. The multimedia learning modules are very similar to regular help menu formats, with the exception of a pop-up glossary and video segments that demonstrate key concepts. Fortunately, there is an option in the preferences that allows for a transcript to appear alongside the video segment, an excellent resource for those who may want information from a variety of sources. One complaint we had was the unnecessary use of sound effects and animations that seemed to negate the mature content presented: we found swishy page-turning noises and sounds that should accompany a magician's tricks pretty distracting. The preferences allow for turning off the sound effects but not the animations.

The content reads easily and covers both CodeWarrior for C and C++ as well as CodeWarrior for Java. While the wording does not cover programming concepts, it does assume that you either have a project that you're ready to work on in the CodeWarrior IDE or that you'd like to create one from scratch. The most beneficial aspect of CodeWarrior Learning Edition is the introduction it gives to Metrowerks' unique terminology: for example, it might not be intuitive off the bat that CodeWarrior "stationary" files are really templates, or what you can do in the Breakpoints Window.

Included with the package is the complete online documentation included with other CodeWarrior packages: the nearly 800-page IDE User's Guide, the CodeWarrior Scripting Reference, C Compiler's Reference, MSL C Reference, MSL C++ Reference, Targeting the Java VM, and Targeting Windows. These provide the ambitious learner with the opportunity to polish their budding programming skills, and do well to support the content presented in the learning environment.

For the cost of the package, this is a great bargain for those who are ready to apply their conceptual programming knowledge to a commonly used development environment. --Emilie Dirks

Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Professional 2003 Overview

Visual Studio .NET Professional 2003 is Microsoft’s multi-faceted development tool, targeting both Windows and Web applications. This 2003 edition includes numerous small improvements as well as major new features like the Compact Framework, for applications that run on Pocket PC and other smart devices. It supports multiple languages, with the main ones being Visual Basic, C#, and C++. There is also a Java-like language called J#, although J# applications only work on Windows so this is not a true Java development tool. The Visual Studio .NET environment is truly integrated. It makes extensive use of docking and tabbed windows, and there are plenty of project wizards along with huge amounts of online help. Auto-completion and pop-up help eases the business of editing code.

Microsoft’s .NET tools are very different from their predecessors. Visual C++ can still compile standard Windows executables, but the other languages all target the .NET Framework, a runtime engine and class library that manages memory and enforces security. Framework applications perform well, since they are compiled to native code at runtime, but there is an overhead in terms of memory usage and the Framework runtime must be installed. In compensation, .NET brings many advantages. All the languages are fully object-oriented, the class library is rich, and XML support is deeply integrated. ASP.NET is for web applications, and represents a large advance on the old ASP. Instead of script, ASP.NET supports any of the .NET languages, running on the server and just-in-time compiled to native code. There is a visual web page designer, and carefully designed applications support a wide range of browsers. A new feature in this version of Visual Studio is Mobile Web Forms, which use adaptive rendering to support the browsers in mobile phones and PDAs.

The database technology in Visual Studio is called ADO.NET. It uses a disconnected model, which means that applications work with data locally, only contacting the server for data transfer or update. It’s a good model for laptops, smart devices, and wide area networks, but there’s a lot to learn for those skilled in older database APIs.

The Visual Studio .NET Professional 2003 edition represents the best value in the range. There’s no Visual SourceSafe or Visio diagramming, and it lacks the server licences found in the high-end Enterprise editions, but it’s otherwise a fully comprehensive package.

For those wondering whether to make the jump to .NET, this release is probably the right moment to go ahead. The technology is maturing, and the inclusion of the Compact Framework makes the package more compelling. Students and newcomers to programming will welcome the clean object-orientation in C#, and the deep XML support on offer is essential for enterprise applications or integrating with other platforms. It’s still important to note the heavy system requirements, and that .NET applications do not run on Windows 95.
